Acne scars across the shoulders and the upper back are the use with the most consistent evidence for radiofrequency microneedling. In our practice the back is treated for them, and for loosened skin lower down, with fine needles placing heat in the deeper skin. The maker names the body without listing areas, and no study names the back with Genius, and we say so plainly. Three sessions four to six weeks apart for scars, at Lutronic Genius RF London, 8 Devonshire Place, with the price in writing at a free consultation.
What it does on the back
Rolling and boxcar acne scars soften as collagen rebuilds under them, and active acne on the back is treated first, before microneedling. Loosened skin firms as the collagen rebuilds over about six months. Ice-pick scars respond less, and the clinician says so at the free consultation.
The evidence
A 2026 review of radiofrequency microneedling across 41 studies found acne scars consistently improved, which stands for the class of treatment; no study names the back with Genius. The acne scars page sets out the evidence for scarring.
The session and who it suits
Numbing cream for 30 to 45 minutes, the tip stamped across the back zone by zone, 30 to 45 minutes in our practice. Redness and swelling for one to three days, light crusting for up to five days in our experience, loose clothing, sunscreen on the back. Adults with acne scars or loosened skin on the back and no active acne, on most skin types after assessment, with darker skin treated at lower energy after a patch test in our practice. The usual exclusions apply: pregnancy and breastfeeding, an active infection, keloid scarring, recent isotretinoin, a bleeding disorder or blood thinners, an implanted device or metal near the area.
