It depends what was treated. In our experience a scar that the treatment has softened stays softened. Texture, pores and the firmness of the lower face and neck drift with age and sun as any skin does, so that result holds for a time and then needs upkeep. The manufacturer describes the collagen continuing to rebuild over the six months after treatment, and the studies measure their results at three to twelve months. In our practice a single maintenance session about once a year keeps texture and firmness where the course left them. No published Genius study reports how long the result lasts, and we would rather say so than invent a number. The timeline
- Days 1 to 5: redness, swelling and light crusting in our experience, then the skin settles.
- Weeks 2 to 6: the first smoothing shows as the surface heals in our experience; the second session is placed four to six weeks after the first.
- Three months after the course: the review with your photographs, taken before the course with your consent. In the acne-scar trial, the improvement was scored at six months; in the lower-face study of 53 patients, the volume under the chin was measured over the course of one to three sessions.
- Six months: the period over which the manufacturer says the collagen continues to rebuild; a 2017 split-face study of radiofrequency microneedling, not of Genius, found deeper treatment improved the nasolabial fold more than shallow treatment at three and twelve months.
What shortens it, and what keeps it
In our experience sun, smoking and weight change shorten it; daily sunscreen costs almost nothing. Acne that keeps scarring needs the acne treated, or new scars form beside the softened ones. A maintenance session a year, in our practice, holds texture and firmness; in our experience a scar course does not need repeating once the scars have softened.
