GUIDE

Is microneedling with RF worth it?

For acne scars, uneven texture, stretch marks and early laxity of the face, the neck and the body, in our clinical judgment yes. Radiofrequency microneedling puts fine needles into the skin and delivers heat through them at a depth the clinician sets, so the repair happens in the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, rather than at the surface, and Genius is Lutronic's version of it. The evidence is of two kinds: studies of Genius itself on the lower face, neck and under the chin, and a larger body of studies of radiofrequency microneedling as a class on acne scars and texture. Both point the same way, and both come with the honest line that this is a medical procedure with known risks. The price is set per area and per course, in writing at a free consultation at Lutronic Genius RF London, 8 Devonshire Place, with a price match on any comparable written quote.

What the studies measured

  • Acne scars, 16 studies and 481 patients, 2025: a review found radiofrequency microneedling "likely an effective treatment" for acne scars. In one of its trials, 26 of 30 patients finished three sessions a month apart. At six months the largest group, 42%, rated their scars 26% to 50% better; average pain was 5.6 out of 10, and some had a passing change in pigment.
  • Against the fractional carbon dioxide laser, 8 trials and 249 patients, 2026: the laser scored slightly better on scars, and radiofrequency microneedling scored lower for pain and carried a quarter of the laser's risk of darkening the skin. A 2026 randomised trial of 30 patients found no significant difference between the two, with a shorter recovery after the radiofrequency.
  • Genius on the lower face and neck: in a 2025 study of 30 patients, average age 56, treated on the lower face and under the chin, the measured change in volume rose with the total energy delivered. In a 2026 study of 53 patients, in two groups with average ages of 51 and 56, radiofrequency microneedling alone and with a laser both reduced the volume under the chin, with no serious side effect.
  • Texture and laxity, 20 studies and 558 patients, 2026: satisfaction above 90% in most studies, though two of the review's authors work for another radiofrequency manufacturer.

Our patients review the clinic on review.clinic, where the clinic holds 4.9 out of 5 from 56 reviews, with 100% saying the treatment was worth it (November 2026).

Who gets their money's worth

Acne scars, especially the rolling and boxcar kind that sit below the surface; uneven texture and large pores; fine lines and early laxity on the face, the jawline and the neck; loose skin and stretch marks on the chest and décolletage, the abdomen, the arms, the thighs, the buttocks and other body areas. Most skin types, darker skin included: the Genius clearance summaries set no skin-type limit, and in our practice darker skin is treated at lower energy after a patch test, because darkening is the main risk in darker skin. The acne scars page and the face and neck page explain each.

What it is not for

Heavy laxity that hangs in a fold, lost volume, and a face that has lost muscle tone: those are surgical or muscle questions, and the clinician says so. Genius is also not cleared for any named condition: in the US it is FDA-cleared for dermatological and general surgical procedures for electrocoagulation, contraction and haemostasis (sealing tissue with heat, tightening it and stopping bleeding), which is the heating it does, and the uses above rest on the studies, not on the label. The US regulator warned patients and clinicians in October 2025 that radiofrequency microneedling is a medical procedure with reports of burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage, and the does it hurt page sets out the risks with their figures.

What it costs you besides money

Three sessions four to six weeks apart, which is the manufacturer's course. 20 to 45 minutes of treatment after numbing cream. The skin red and swollen for one to three days, sometimes five, with light crusting for up to five days, and back at work the next day with make-up in our experience. The results page explains the timeline.
