HOW IT WORKS

How Genius RF microneedling works

Genius is a radiofrequency microneedling system made by Lutronic. A tip with 49 fine needles, in a seven by seven grid, is pressed onto the skin. The needles go in to a depth the clinician sets, up to 4 mm. Radiofrequency energy at 460 kHz passes between them for a fraction of a second, heating a small column of tissue around each needle at that depth while the surface is spared. The skin repairs those columns with new collagen and elastin over the following months, which is what softens a scar or a stretch mark, smooths texture and firms the skin of the face, the neck and the body. Lutronic describes the system as reading the skin's resistance 500 times a second and adjusting the energy as it goes; that is the manufacturer's description. Every session is at Lutronic Genius RF London, 8 Devonshire Place, after a free consultation.

What the heat does at depth

Ordinary microneedling makes channels and lets the surface heal; radiofrequency microneedling adds heat where the needle tip sits, so the repair happens in the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, where scars and laxity live, and not only at the surface. The depth is the clinician's main tool: shallow for texture and pores, deeper for rolling acne scars and for the lower face and neck, where a 2026 Genius study set the needles at 1 to 2.3 mm. The maker's bench tests on animal tissue, reported in the 2026 clearance summary, showed coagulation zones and contraction comparable to Morpheus8's. The Genius or Morpheus8 page sets the two side by side.

What the clearance says

In the US, Genius is FDA-cleared for dermatological and general surgical procedures: in 2018 for electrocoagulation and haemostasis (sealing tissue with heat and stopping bleeding), and in 2026 with contraction added. The record names no condition and no area, carries no skin-type limit, and is for prescription use. The uses on these pages, acne scars, texture, stretch marks and laxity on the face, the neck and the body, rest on the published studies and our clinical experience, not on the label, and we say so.

The session

The clinician looks at the skin, grades your skin type and plans the depth and energy for each zone; numbing cream goes on for 30 to 45 minutes in our practice. The skin is cleaned, the cream removed, and the tip stamped across the area zone by zone, each stamp a pressure and a burst of heat; 20 to 45 minutes of treatment. Afterwards the skin is red and swollen for one to three days, sometimes five, with light crusting for up to five days. No make-up on the first day, sunscreen daily, and no swimming, saunas, hot baths or heavy exercise for 48 hours in our practice. Three sessions four to six weeks apart is the manufacturer's course, with a review three months after the last. The does it hurt page describes the comfort plan and the risks.

Who it suits, and who it does not

Adults with acne scars, uneven texture, large pores, fine lines, stretch marks or early laxity of the face, jawline and neck, the chest and décolletage, the abdomen, the arms, the thighs, the buttocks or another body area, on most skin types, darker skin included after assessment, with darker skin treated at lower energy after a patch test in our practice. Not in pregnancy or breastfeeding, over an active infection, cold sore, active acne, eczema or psoriasis, with keloid or raised scarring, recent isotretinoin (Roaccutane), a bleeding disorder or blood thinners, or with a pacemaker, implanted device or metal implant near the area. Heavy laxity, lost volume and a face that has lost muscle tone are not what it treats; the clinician chooses between Genius and Morpheus8, which we also provide, for the result you want, and where that needs heat deeper than 4 mm, Morpheus8's body tip reaches 7 mm. The US regulator's October 2025 communication on radiofrequency microneedling names burns, scarring, fat loss and nerve damage among reported complications, and the clinician goes through them with you before you consent.
